Mu-rá-lo-gy

The “Pelicans” mural was one of those rare dream commissions. The client was open to any number of possibilities and since the restaurant was named ‘El Pelicano’ I suggested a mural dealing with pelicans. I had long been engaged in painting them; it is one of the things I have loved most about the coast: watching their swooping, almost prehistoric bodies, so gracefully skimming over the sea. The client loved the idea, and so we were able to go from inception to full installation of the mural in a matter of weeks.

The study below was requested by the client in preparation for a mural to cover a wall 10 x 30 feet (3 x 10 meters). In the original study I had relied on photos from my travels through Tuscany to create the panorama which shows through the trompe l’oeil arches.

In the actual mural we simplified the design markedly, decreasing the number of arches from five to four, and flattening out the landscape until we were left with a misty parklike effect.

As always, my beautiful wife is the instigator of some of my best work. This unusual ‘tumbling fruits’ mural was her request and adorns the wall of our very own cabaña.

The design came from a portfolio of mural studies that I keep to suggest possibilities to clients.
