Inspiration in Oaxaca

“Living in Mexico is always exciting, but while exploring the Costa Verde of the Southern state of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-haw-kah) my inspiration was renewed and deepened. The rich colors and intense textures of the Oaxaqueña culture led me to experiment with a newly playful approach to technique -- oils which look watercolors, using odd materials, anything to maintain the freshness of my art.



My renewed engagement with watercolor, a medium I had used extensively during my time in Greece, led me to develop my “Get Wet With Watercolor!” workshops on the Oaxacan coast. Watercolor’s immediacy (which is really a combination of its ease of handling and its fast drying time) is perfect for capturing the light of La Costa Verde.



It was also in Oaxaca that I renewed my interest in Murals. I had completed commissions in Israel, but had then concentrated more on developing a new approach to painting. In Oaxaca a friend suggested that rather than hanging pictures on peoples walls — I should turn their walls into art. One of those simple suggestions which went right to my heart. Since my work had been getting bigger and bigger anyway….”
